Hello everyone! My name is Becci and I am currently taking a break from bedside nursing by doing home hospice work full time. I do still pick up PRN in critical care in the CVICU. I have been travelling the last two years in critical care. With this experience I can safely say that I have NO experience in pediatric nursing. Our local hospitals do not have a true pediatric unit – we just house the pediatric patients until we can get them transported to a pediatric hospital (approximately two hours away).
So I have established that I have no pediatric medical experience but I do have a lot of experience in working with kids through 4-H, high school cheer coaching, junior high cross country coaching, and pee wee soccer and cheer coaching. I have always loved working with kids and I think that working with smaller humans would be a great break from working with adults at the bedside. I know that this course will be challenging in learning all that I need to know to get a start in the pediatric world. I know that I need to spend more time reading and looking at pediatric dosing of medications. I know that I need to take my preceptors advice to heart and spend the time reviewing common illnesses and conditions that we will normally see in our area. The clinic I will be precepting in is located in an impoverished Appalachian area in West Virginia. I need to know the challenges that face our little patients and their families. I also need to know what is available in area resources due to the economic challenges faced.
In our area there is a great need for more pediatric providers. This appears to be a trend across the nation. The National Resident Matching Program has shown an increase in the number of unfilled pediatric positions (Robert & Vinci, 2021). Knowing this may motivate some of us to perhaps fill the voids as pediatric nurse practitioners in those offices across the nation. The use of nurse practitioners in pediatric care started in 1965 and the role has been transitioning since. From providing routine care to acute care requiring prescriptions, reporting abuse, and promoting pediatric wellness nurse practitioners have been there to fill pediatric needs (Aruda et al, 2016). Studies are also showing the importance of NPs with the care of children with critical medical conditions. Nurse practitioners are focused on wellness promotion and education and that makes them an integral part of their care. The use of NPs with these critical patients can decrease healthcare costs, improve quality of life, and increase patient satisfaction (Samuels et al, 2017).
