GETTING STARTED WITH PEDIATRIC

Primary care of children from newborns to those on the cusp of adulthood requires considerable knowledge, as well as the finesse to manage parents and families of all types, and the changing needs, attitudes, and independence of young people as they grow and mature. Considering that this week—in fact, this entire first module—is focused on growth and development, it is fitting for you to reflect on your current and anticipated growth and development in advanced nursing, and specifically, in pediatric care. When you made your decision to pursue training as a Family Nurse Practitioner, how did pediatrics factor in your thinking? Is the opportunity to work with children and adolescents a strong motivator, or does it rank for you as more of a concern? NRPNP 6541 Advanced Practice Adolescents & Children Discussion

As you get started with this course, take time to reflect on your present capacity as you prepare to immerse yourself in the requirements of pediatric care as a nurse practitioner. How can you benefit most from this course, and how can it further you along the professional path you have chosen or in achieving your career goals?

This is a bit about myself to help with the discussion:

My name is xxx, and I have been a nurse for seven years. I began my career in healthcare at Sanford Acute Care. I have worked in the Short Stay Unit, Cardiology Unit and AVA’s House (Pediatric and adult hospice). Currently I work at Acute Care in the beautiful Sioux Falls of South Dakota

My hobbies and personal interest include traveling, volleyball, DIY projects, reading, writing, and relaxing whenever I get a chance. I am married and enjoys my time with my husband and our seven years old daughter.  NRPNP 6541 Advanced Practice Adolescents & Children Discussion

My name is XXXX and I have practiced nursing for seven years and I have the feeling that this is the most fulfilling carrier in life. My first placement as a nurse was at Sanford Acute Care but I am currently working at Acute Care in the beautiful Sioux Falls of South Dakota. As a nurse, I prefer caring for a wide range of patients with varied needs including adults and children and I find this useful because it helps me in understanding the continuum of care. My duration of work at my current place of work, has given me an opportunity to earn my professional experience that has been significant in identifying my areas of strengths and weaknesses that pertains a family nurse practitioner.  One of my main strengths as a family nurse practitioner is good communication. Good communication is not only important for my pediatric patients but their parents as well (Feng et al., 2023). For example, it is common knowledge that pediatric patients can give consent hence, we depend on their parents for consent on medical procedures and this requires good communication skills to ensure that parents make informed decisions for their children (Nepi, 2019). On the side of children, I always try to engage them based on their age as well as maturity level. For instance, I commonly use TV shows to entice and engage with school going children. As a family nurse practitioner, I embrace several values that are essential both in my professional development as well as in my personal life. Some of the values include diversity and honesty. Honesty is particularly important in my professional carrier because it is ethical for healthcare practitioners to be honest to the patients and their families (Sheehan & Fealy, 2020). Diversity is helpful in my personal life in that it aligns with my hobbies and personal interest such as playing volleyball, DIY projects, reading and writing both of which helps to improve my mental and physical health. Some of my goals include being a pediatrician and a nurse leader. The program entails a robust training in pediatric care which is helpful in increasing knowledge and skills in dealing with this special patient population.
