The Nine Tenets Essay
In healthcare, ethics are essential since they help nursing professionals improve their care skills to enhance the patient’s overall health. In that case, nurses must have guidelines that enable them to uphold high practice standards as they interact with the patients in a daily routine. Such guidelines are essential since nurses can easily instill good moral values and enable nurses to practice honesty and transparency. Ethics are also crucial in healthcare since it guides practitioners on the best ways to respect, care and empathize with their patients regardless of their background or conditions that made them seek healthcare services. As a result, the American Nurse Association (ANA) incorporates nine tenets that help the nursing staff engage in their nursing practice. The paper will evaluate Provision 1 and Provision 5. Provision 1
ANA’s provision one prompts the nursing staff to respect every person’s dignity, unique attributes and worth. According to Mudd et al. (2020), each person within the healthcare setting needs to be treated with utmost compassion and respect to create a viable rapport and enhance relationships. However, despite the provision being based on any relationship among people, the rule is essential in nursing since it fosters the relationship between patients and nurses regarding healthcare choices. Furthermore, each individual should be treated with respect and compassion. Although the rule should apply to any relationship between people, in nursing practice, it is essential to understand that patients are free to make their choices regarding their health (Xu et al., 2020). I will apply the tenet in the practice setting with my patients by establishing good relationships with people and providing them with the information they need to make their healthcare decisions. In addition, I will treat the people around me with respect and compassion. At the same time, I will respect the informed choices that my patients make, even in cases when it may appear that other decisions would have had better outcomes. Hence, the main purpose of the Provision 1 tenet is to guide medical practitioners on the best ways to handle colleagues and patients properly. Patients perceive compassion and respect in the healthcare setting as part of quality indicators, thus making the provision more effective in nursing practice. For instance, if a patient shows up to healthcare and they become hesitant to some treatment for their reasons, and their health situation is in bad condition, the nurses must treat them with dignity as they find an appropriate solution. In such a case, the tenet will be effective in my practice to ensure that all the patients receive compassionate and fair treatment. Journal of Clinical Nursing Discussion Essay
Provision 5
Provision 5 requires nurses to take care of themselves as they care about others, including promoting safety and health, maintaining competences, preserving integrity and character wholeness and continuing professional and personal growth. According to Mudd et al. (2020), the provision is essential since it reminds nurses to manage their activities accordingly to meet better healthcare results, particularly personal health. That is because, once the nurse’s health is good, they can easily advise the patients on the best ways to care for their health. In that case, the tenet is also essential since it prompts nurses to stay up-to-date with healthcare information, making continuing education a crucial ambition that nurses should exhibit (Xu et al., 2020). In practice, the tenant will be essential in helping the nursing staff to lead a healthy lifestyle, including proper time management to help them prevent adverse effects like developing serious mental illness. Hence, it will be important to uphold provision 5 in nursing practice to improve nurses’ self-care, which will help advise patients to achieve quality care. Conclusion
Ethics are essential for every healthcare provider to uphold to enhance their overall nursing practice. Hence, nurses must adhere to the different provisions within the ANA’s nursing tenets to improve the general quality of care they offer patients. Therefore every nurse needs to ensure that they adhere to these nursing practice guidelines to improve overall healthcare outcomes. Journal of Clinical Nursing Discussion Essay
