Interviewer: Thank you for being with us today. Tell us about a healthcare program, within your practice. What are the costs and projected outcomes of this program?
Interviewee: It is my pleasure being here today. To begin with, our organization has taken a significant step of implementing a comprehensive palliative care program with the aim of improving the quality of life for our terminally ill patients. As such, it is a program associated with intensive capital expenses. These expenses are associated with medications, staffing resources, support services and purchase of required equipment. With the implementation of this program and its subsequent cost, there are various projected outcomes. These outcomes include improved emotional support for both patients and their families, improved management of patient symptoms, and provision of a conducive as well as harmonious environment and experience for patients in their end of life stages. Interviewee: Our target population include individuals living with terminal illnesses as well as their family members who might be requiring emotional support.

Interviewee: Nurses play a vital role during the designing and development of a hospice program. To begin with, we play an essential role in determining the specific requirements for the patient, developing approaches that are individualized for management of symptoms for each patient and finally ensuring that the family members receive every information concerning their patient on time. For example, we make recommendations of individualized treatment plans for every patient after conducting thorough physical, spiritual and emotional patient assessments.

Interviewee: Advocacy is one vital requirement in the field of hospice nursing. We advocate for terminally ill patients through actively participating in interdisciplinary team meetings, sharing the insights that we receive from directly interacting with our patients and contributing in all the decisions regarding treatment care plans for all our patients. Additionally, we ensure that the proposed design of the program maintains the patient’s dignity and utmost respect that they require in their end of life journey. We also ensure that the design is also in accordance to their wishes during this critical period of their lives.
Interviewer: What is the role of the nurse in healthcare program implementation? How does this role vary between design and implementation of healthcare programs? Can you provide examples?
Interviewee: During the previous design phase, nurses work together with physicians and other healthcare professionals towards developing procedures and care plans to smoothen the process. In the implementation stage on the other hand, our main role is executing these plans and procedures, monitoring the patient responses and making the necessary modifications for the interventions offered to these patients. For example, if the pain management for a terminally ill patient involves administration of certain medication, it is the role of a nurse to ensure that the patient receives the medication in time as well as monitoring and evaluating the effectiveness of this medication. Interviewer: Who are the members of a healthcare team that you believe are most needed to implement a program? Can you explain why?
Interviewee: Hospice care practice is a nursing practice area that requires the collaboration of multidisciplinary team for successful implementation of a program. The interdisciplinary team in this case is made of physicians, nurses, chaplains, social workers and volunteers. Physicians contribute by offering their expertise in improving the quality of care for patients. Nurses are essential since they provide care directly to these patients. Social workers are essential towards provision of all the psychological needs required by the patient and their families. Chaplains help in attending to all the spiritual requirements of the patient. Finally, volunteers help in addressing any additional need that the patient might require. For example, a terminally ill patient who lacks enough blood in their system might receive blood donations from volunteers of the same blood group type.
