Understanding Haitian Cultural Beliefs and
Practices in Healthcare: A Transcultural Assessment Approach

Introduc)on
A. Capture      Reader’s         Interest       Â
In         the      United States healthcare providers       must   integrate diverse            cultural           backgrounds and     beliefs into     their   care delivery          to        accommodate patients’         varied traditions       and behaviors.                  Â
B. Build           Case   Through         Logic       Â
The     Haitian            community’s healthcare     decision-making        and adherence      reJlects           its strong connection     to        a distinctive      mix     of         African, French,           and     Caribbean traditions.      Effective         healthcare delivery          can      be        obstructed by        misunderstandings  between different         cultural           perspectives.
C.  Topic          Sentence/Thesis        Statement     Â
Healthcare     providers       who implement     Giger  and     Davidhizar’s Transcultural Assessment                 Model achieve           valuable understanding           of         Haitian cultural           values and     health behavior         patterns         which support           patient-centered communication         strategies       and enable better intervention  outcomes along  with    educational   approaches that     respect           cultural norms.
First Main Point: Communica)on, Space, and Social Organiza)on
A.         Communication        Â
1.                 Haitians          use      Haitian            Creole or        French            for            communication         while            English            serves as        a            secondary      language        which            creates            communication            challenges.                 Â
2.                 They   use      indirect            communication         methods            and     respect           authority            while  avoiding         directness            which could  be        interpreted            as        disrespectful.
B.         SpaceÂ
1.                 Haitians          typically            accept closer personal         space            with    people they    know  but            experience     discomfort     with            physical          closeness            during medical            consultations.
2.                 The     preferences   for            physical          contact            differ            according       to        gender            and     age      as        women            often  choose to        be            touched          by        other            women           Â
C.         Social OrganizationÂ
1.                 When making            healthcare            decisions        families            participate     actively           with            elder  members        and     male            leaders            taking primary            roles.              Â
2.                 Religious        authorities     like            pastors           and     Vodou            priests play    a          signiJicant            role     in         healthcare            decision-making        when  it            comes to        chronic           or            terminal         illnesses.        Â
Second Main Point: Time Orienta)on, Environmental Control, and Spiritual Beliefs
A. Time            Orientation   Â
1. The Haitian            preference     for        present           and     spiritual        timing supersedes    punctuality        which potentially     impacts        appointment attendance.  Â
2. Preventive care    is         less        emphasized;  patients          may        seek    care    primarily        when        ill         or        symptoms        worsen.          Â
B.         Environmental           Control
1.                 Spiritual         or        supernatural            explanations for       illness are            common         among Haitians            because          of         beliefs like            those  in         Vodou.            Â
2.                 Many  Haitians          combine            healing            rituals together            with    herbal treatments    and            prayer as        alternatives   to            Western         medical            approaches   Â
C.         Spiritual         Beliefs
The     concept           of         health involves          maintaining   a balance           between         physical and     spiritual          elements through          practices        like prayer and     faith    healing.          Â
2.         Haitian            community    may avoid  invasive          medical procedures    if          they    believe these  actions            oppose            their spiritual          principles.     Â
Third Main Point: Biological Varia)ons and Impact on Treatment Adherence &
Educa)on
A.         Biological       Variations     Â
1.                 Genetic           predispositions            in         the      Haitian            population     include            higher risks   for       conditions            like     hypertension, diabetes,            and     sickle cell      anemia.           Â
2.                 Pain    expression     may            differ—some may    underreport            due     to        cultural            norms around            stoicism.           Â
B.         Treatment     Adherence    Â
1.                 Belief in         natural            healing            and     distrust            of         pharmaceuticals       may            lead    to        incomplete            medication    adherence.    Â
2.                 Patients          may    stop            treatment      once   symptoms            improve          without            Jinishing         prescribed            regimens.      Â
C.         Education     Â
1. Limited       health literacy           and        language        barriers          may        impact understanding           of        diagnoses,      treatment,     and        medications. Â
2. Culturally  appropriate   education        using  visuals and     interpreters        can      improve          outcomes.       Â
Conclusion Restate Topic
Understanding           and     respecting Haitian            cultural           beliefs is crucial for       delivering      equitable, effective         care.  Â
B.         Summarize    Three Main   Points
1. Communication     styles, family        dynamics,       and     social roles        impact care    delivery.        Â
2. Time            orientation    and        spiritual          beliefs may    affect        appointment attendance    and        acceptance    of         care.  Â
3. Biological   factors and     cultural        approaches    to        healing        affect  treatment      adherence        and     education       needs.
C.         Revisit Introduction  or        Tie All       Ideas  Together       Â
As        nurse practitioners, applying Giger  and     Davidhizar’s  framework enables           us        to        tailor  our communication,         interventions, and education       strategies,      ultimately fostering         trust   and     improving care    for       Haitian            patients.
