Informative Reflection: Mexican American Communities This project will give you the ability to demonstrate your understanding of the foundation and origins of Mexican American communities. You will be creating a project that will include relevant artifacts, sources, information, context, and analysis to create a narrative that shows your comprehension of the foundation and origins of Mexican American communities. Reflect on all the information we’ve covered this far to show your understanding of how this is all connected to origins of Mexican American identity/communities. Only include information covered in Modules 1 – 7. Directions: You can present the following information in the format of your choice – “Portfolio” format, visual presentation, pamphlet, or essay (if you have another idea, please feel free to ask me!). The central focal point is to think about the foundation of Mexican American communities. Center your project around the following prompt: Analyze the historical events and cultural influences from the origins of civilizations to the 1930s, and why they are important to understanding the origins of Mexican American communities. Draw connections of the history learned in modules 1 – 7: origins of civilizations to the 1930s. Do not include evidence beyond this era. The intent is to show how the history we learned contributed to the origins of Mexican American communities AND why you find them important to understand. Must include a thesis, relevant evidence, and relevant analysis to develop your argument. Project Contents: Your project should contain a thesis: The goal is to develop an argument in response to the prompt. Your thesis should clearly state what your argument is. If you are creating a visual/portfolio, pamphlet, etc. you can include a section that simply states your thesis. You should be creating a narrative that seeks to explain the foundation of Mexican American communities, and why you believe this information to be valuable to understand. You should include relevant evidence analysis from the following topics: Indigenous Civilizations Colonization Mexican Independence Mexican American War Mexican Revolution/Migration + Growth of Mexican American cities You do not need to review ALL information from the modules. The goal is to develop an argument – so select and include relevant evidence that proves your argument. Be sure to include relevant evidence: Identify specific policies, events, regions, individuals, and concepts that highlight the foundation of Mexican American communities. Identify means: clearly define with details. Analyze this evidence to prove your argument: Draw connections that help prove the argument you are making (your thesis). This means provide context, include necessary observations, explain impact, and draw connections to prove your larger conclusions. Remember the goal is to demonstrate how these topics are connected to the origins of Mexican American identity – meaning, you should draw connections of how these topics are relevant to the foundation of Mexican American identity. Include at least 3 relevant sources total into your project. These source can be primary or secondary sources. Sources can include direct quotes from policy, text, artifact, artwork, etc. The sources should be used as evidence and integrated into your project and used in your analysis to contribute to your overall narrative. This means these sources should help you develop your argument, so also include analysis that explains how the source is relevant to your narrative. You can use sources from Modules 1-7 in your project (including the primary sources you analyzed). You can refer to previous work, just be sure to reframe into the project. Formatting: Use complete sentences in your narratives. All work should be original work. When you refer to any sources – direct quotes or paraphrasing – use proper citations in MLA citations. View PCC Library: MLA Style Guide You may format the project as you wish (Canva, Word, Google Slides, PDF, etc.) – you will submit via Canvas. Rubric below You may choose the formatting of your choice: essay, portfolio, pamphlet, Google Slides, etc.
