The aim is to explore the link between theory and practice and the importance of reflective practice and an evidence-based approach to the leadership and management of people in an organisation.
Assessment 1: Group Presentation to the board (40%) – 26th November 2025
The task is to undertake a reflective evaluation of how two separate organisations (Paddy and Scott’s Coffee and Halo) lead and manage their people and how it contributes to the performance of the organisation.
You will develop a presentation to deliver to the CEO / board of the company that addresses the following:
Describe the background context to each of the organisations and critically explore what has influenced their approach to managing people.
What role has leadership had in this? Using the academic theory and research on leadership, critically analyse the leadership of both Jon Reed (Paddy and Scott’s Coffee – Paddy and Scotts Website) and Paul Hamilton (Halo - Halos website).
Finally, make a pitch on what you feel are the companies ‘employee value proposition’ (EVP) and how they can leverage it.
Presentation scheduled time: 20 minutes with an additional 10 minutes for questions.
Assessment 2: Written individual coursework (60%) – 17th December 2025 An individual report that explores:
The background to the MBO of Paddy and Scott’s Coffee, what it represented and implications for the company and staff and why change needed to occur – i.e. “what was the issue and why was there a need for strategic change?” Implications for business and supply chain? Critically analyse the change process using academic change models. Critically evaluate the role of leadership during the change – i.e. “what happened and how well was it led and managed?” What leadership theories and research could provide the rationale / explanation to approach taken? Reflect on the potential implications of the change initiative for employee engagement and performance – i.e. what impact do you think it might have had? In completing the report, you should specifically provide an individual rationale from the academic literature for the arguments made in your group presentation.
You should offer a final personal reflection that considers the importance of reflective practice in managing and leading people and your takeaways in terms of your own leadership approach.
