didactic assignment: state and Local Public Health Issue As health professionals, we each have our passions and personal priorities. As chief executives, we must factor the impact to the organization into the prioritization of resources. For this Assignment, consider the potential to do both—focus on one of your passions as an advanced practice nurse while demonstrating the impact of this health issue on your organization and the community. Your intention is to educate and inform a local audience—your community population—on your selected health issue and to make the case for greater attention at the local level and from your state leaders. Creating an informed citizenry can encourage advocacy that prompts citizen groups to press for more resources, local and state, for addressing an issue. You will create a PowerPoint presentation for this Assignment. Although you are not required to present it locally, consider how and where you might do so—or how your presentation could be the basis of one you give in the future as a nursing executive. Use this Assignment to prepare for your education and advocacy role as an executive leader—one that is always grounded in sound evidence and data. Resources Be sure to review the Learning Resources before completing this activity. Click the weekly resources link to access the resources. WEEKLY RESOURCES To prepare: Begin by identifying a public health issue that deserves attention (or more attention) in your state and community. You may have an issue immediately in mind or you may research state-level organizations’ policy briefs for public health issues in your state. Examples in the Learning Resources include state information from the National Conference of State Legislatures, National Perinatal Association, and National Rural Health Association. One or more groups may also have valuable research on the issue you select. The following are potential issues (listed alphabetically) that are national in scope and also may affect your community and state. However, do not hesitate to choose an issue that is unique to your community. A meaningful presentation is the goal. Access to mental health Aging prison populations Gun and other forms of violence Homelessness Mental, physical, and educational well-being of children Opioid and substance abuse disorder Women’s health issues Youth suicide Review recommended resources on your selected topic in the Week 5 Learning Resources. Search for additional resources—and, in particular, current local and state data—to provide key background and information on the health issue. Also be sure to review the required Executive Voices video with Dr. Patricia Stone (Walden, 2024), a chief nursing officer who discusses the importance of being aware of and getting involved in local policy development that impacts health issues. Keep in mind your presentation goal is to educate on this health issue by explaining how it developed; multiple impacts it is having, demonstrated by data; and benefits of addressing this health issue in effective ways. Also, be mindful that you are aiming to encourage local advocacy on the focus health issue. Prepare a presentation that is clear and understandable to a nonmedical, lay audience. Consider these points, which align with the slides you will prepare: History, focusing on national or local history, that helps explain the current situation in your community and state Current state and local data Contributing state/local political and social issues Financial and operational impacts to state/local organizations, including your healthcare organization Related legal and human rights issues Benefits of funding to address the issue and potential positive outcomes Recommendations for ways to reach out to state-level leaders on this issue and specific types of resources for which to advocate Download the PowerPoint template Download PowerPoint templatein the Learning Resources.
