This Te Kura NCEA Level 3 maths activity asks you to write a report for a parents’ committee planning a quiz evening to fund a netball team’s trip. Using the task list, durations and precedences in Resource A, you draw a network diagram, find the critical path and earliest finish, schedule every task, allocate the work to the fewest committee members and then test the plan against an unexpected delay and a missing member.
Assessment Criteria
- Achieved: apply critical path analysis in solving problems.
- Merit: apply critical path analysis, using relational thinking, in solving problems.
- Excellence: apply critical path analysis, using extended abstract thinking, in solving problems.

Introduction: The Quiz Evening
A small committee of parents is planning a quiz evening to raise funds for a team of netball players to travel to a national tournament. As well as selling tickets, they will sell food and drinks on the night and hope to collect prizes donated by local people and businesses. The times given are the number of weeks leading up to the quiz evening, and committee members work on the tasks in their spare time. The quality of your report and how well you link your findings to this context, including the implications of unexpected delays, determine the overall grade. Clearly communicate the different parts of your report, including any diagrams.
Task 1
Use the information in Resource A to prepare a report for the organisers of the quiz evening and recommend how the tasks could be allocated to a minimum number of committee members. The report should include:
- a network diagram showing all the tasks in the project
- the tasks in the critical path
- the minimum length of time required to complete all the tasks
- the start and finish time for each task.
Assume that all committee members will set the date (Task A) and help set up the venue (Task J), and that a different member from the person who wrote the questions will check the answers.
Task 2
If the committee member writing the questions has an unexpected illness and there is a two-week delay in writing the questions (Task E), discuss the impact of this delay on the planning and suggest a way the committee could overcome the problem and still be ready for the quiz evening.
If one committee member is unavailable and the committee has one less member, find the minimum number of weeks it would take to complete the organisation and show how the tasks could be reallocated.
Your overall grade is determined by the quality of your reasoning and how well you link it to the context.
