The FMLA often creates confusion when employees provide incomplete information, when supervisors misunderstand their responsibilities, or when medical conditions require intermittent leave. Employers must balance business needs with strict statutory obligations, and missteps—especially early in the process—can quickly lead to legal exposure.
Consider the following scenario:
A customer service representative at a national insurance company has recently been missing work due to “severe recurring migraines.” She tells her supervisor she “may need to miss more shifts in the coming weeks” and that her doctor is scheduling tests. The supervisor, frustrated by staffing shortages, tells her she must provide a doctor’s note before any additional absences will be approved. Over the next month, she misses several partial days and full days during migraine episodes. HR eventually learns of the situation and advises the supervisor that the employee may be eligible for FMLA leave. When HR sends certification forms, the supervisor also warns the employee that “continued absences could affect your standing on the team.” The employee later files an FMLA interference complaint.
In your initial post, address the following questions:
Did the employee provide enough information at the outset to trigger the employer’s duty to inquire about potential FMLA eligibility? Why or why not? Did the supervisor’s requirement of a doctor’s note “before any further absences” comply with FMLA rules? How might the supervisor’s later warning about “continued absences” be interpreted under FMLA interference or retaliation standards? Should the intermittent nature of the employee’s symptoms qualify for FMLA leave? What factors determine whether migraines constitute a “serious health condition”? If you were HR, what steps would you take to correct the organization’s handling of this case and prevent future violations? Q3 (a Jernigan)
Discussion #8: Please address the following prompt (and as a nod to Dr. Bowles who designed the course, as I have left his questions in place for this final week, with some modest additions) to frame your main answer post for Week Eight (Week of October 26 – November 01).
- Why does Phillips-Fein recount the quote about the “twilight zone between memory and history”? What is the warning for those who want to write about contemporary history? Further, in her chapter on “1973 to the Present,” she did not mention 9/11 (nor COVID-19 or China’s One Belt One Road, or the impact of the current conflict in eastern Europe, obviously, as all post-publication). If you were her editor and wanted to suggest that she include a statement about the significance of the 9/11’s, COVID’s, China’s OBOR, and/or Putin’s actions in eastern Europe in relation to American history, what would you write to her to spur additional content?

Part 1 – Initial Reflection (Due Day One):
In what ways do digital transformation initiatives impact organizational structures and the nature of work?
Provide a thoughtful, research-informed response based on your current understanding, course materials, and/or personal experience. Consider changes to hierarchies, communication flows, job roles, and employee expectations. Part 2 – AI-Augmented Reflection (Due Day Three):
Revisit the same question, but this time use a generative AI tool (e.g., ChatGPT, Copilot, etc.) to assist in formulating a new or revised response Compare and contrast your original response with the AI-supported one. What differences do you notice in depth, perspective, or clarity? Reflect on how AI might support or limit critical thinking and analysis in academic or professional work. This two-part format:
Reinforces core OB concepts like change management and organizational design, Introduces a metacognitive layer where students think about how they think, Promotes ethical and critical use of AI tools in knowledge work.In what ways do digital transformation initiatives impact organizational structures and the nature of work? The Integration of HR Functions for Organizational Effectiveness
This week is a reflection on the integration of HR functions for organizational effectiveness and how the concepts learned throughout the course can be synthesized into a comprehensive HR strategy.
For Discussion:
Reflect on the integration of HR functions for organizational effectiveness. How can the concepts learned throughout the course be synthesized into a comprehensive HR strategy?
Consider how the various HR functions such as recruitment, training, performance management, and employee relations can be integrated to create a cohesive and effective HR strategy. Share your experiences with HR strategies that have successfully combined multiple functions to achieve organizational goals. Provide examples of integrated HR approaches that have led to improved organizational performance.
Q6 (stairs art)
In this final module, we saw a number of artists who explored the theme of identity in their work. This comes in the form of individual identity and even cultural identity. In this discussion, you will use an AI tool of your choice to create a work of art that includes at least three components of your identity. These could include your hobbies, jobs, values, experiences, or aspirations. Write down the prompt that you used to create your work of art. Then, ask AI to modify the image to reflect one of the styles of art we learned about this week. Continue modifying your image until you are happy with the results.
In your initial post, share the work of art you created using AI. Be sure to identity which AI program you used. Then, explain what the work of art communicates about who you are. Finally, explain how you think the use of AI might impact the creation of art. Consider the benefits and limitations to the medium as a part of your answer. What ways can AI be used for self-expression?
