Assessment Description

Using a Case Study that simulates an organisation setting, you will work in teams of 5 (unless otherwise approved by Unit Lecturer) to analyse the case. Teams will have to be finalised NO LATER than Week 4 of the Trimester. Each team (of minimum 4 to maximum 8 teams, unless otherwise approved by your Unit Lecturer) will be assigned to a theme by your Unit Lecturer that coincides with one of the topics 5, 6, 7, 8 and 9. The themes include:

  • Motivation (Topic 5): Minimum 1 – Maximum 2 Teams
  • Decision Making (Topic 6): Minimum 1 – Maximum 2 Teams
  • Conflict (Topic 7): Minimum 1 – Maximum 2 Teams
  • Power and Influence (Topic 8): Minimum 1 – Maximum 2 Teams
  • Leadership (Topic 9): Minimum 1 – Maximum 2 Teams

Each team will focus on addressing the issues related to the case based on an assigned theme. The format of the Case Study Analysis and Presentation should include the following, and with a suggested time allocation:

  • Introduction of the assigned Theme (For Example, Decision Making) – 1.5 minutes
  • Identification of Relevant Issues in the Case Study Related to the Specific Theme – 6.5 minutes
  • Specific Solutions and Recommendations to Address the Issues Raised – 6.5 minutes
  • Conclusion and Reference List – 0.5 minute

The objective of the presentation is to ensure your audience, specifically your Lecturer, sees your demonstration of a comprehensive examination of the assigned topic in relation to the case study.

The Case Study Analysis must be evidence-based and researched-based. When conducting your analysis rigorously, it is important that you clearly identify issues presented in the case that are directly related to your specific theme. You must be familiar with the case to connect the dots. It is important that you do not regurgitate the story of the case but rather justify the basis of the identified issues by applying specific OBM theories/concepts directly related to your assigned theme.

Accurately identifying the issues presented in the case and selecting the appropriate OBM theories/concepts to relate to the issues would be required. In addition, you and your team will have to present solutions and recommendations to mitigate the specific issues raised.

Your analysis, solutions and recommendations should be well supported by research. Validating your claims with at least 5 high quality academic references i.e., relevant and peer-reviewed journal article at five or less years would be required. APA7 referencing must be applied to complete in-text and reference list in the presentation.

This assessment will also assess your verbal and digital skills. This is a business professional presentation, and you are expected to dress in business professional attire. At the end of each presentation, there will be a 20-minute Oral Examination (Viva) led by the Lecturer.

Considering that this is a team assessment, team dynamics and members’ abilities to work collaboratively in a diverse context would be assessed throughout the presentation. it is essential that tasks are distributed equitably to every member of the team. It is the responsibility of the team members to manage the deadline and monitor the progress to the completion of this assessment task.

What you need to do:

  1. Read carefully and be familiar with the case, “Crisis at Atom Systems” that is available in Assessment Section on LMS.
  2. Review the respective assigned theme with any other resources and recent research. You should study the relevant chapter(s) in your prescribed textbook and look up recent, relevant and peer-reviewed journal articles on the topic with the help of Murdoch’s online library. Relevant research articles can also be accessed via “My Unit Reading”.
  3. Identify the issues in the case that is related to the team’s assigned theme
  4. Provide your critical analysis of the case with the help of relevant OBM concepts and research related to your assigned theme.
  5. Present solutions and recommendations that must be justified by relevant OBM concepts/theories and research to address the issues identified.
  6. The presentation should include the following aspects:
    • Introduction to the assigned theme (e.g., Decision Making)
    • Issues identified in the case related to the assigned theme.
    • What specific OBM theories/concept and quality research on the assigned theme can you apply to provide your analysis? Apply OBM theories/concepts with quality research to support, explain and discuss your analysis of the issues.
    • Justified and Supported Solutions and Recommendations that coherently address the issues identified.
    • References
  7. Following the presentation, the Oral Examination (Viva Voce) shall be conducted. Each team member will be asked targeted questions by the Lecturer to assess your individual understanding, critical analysis, depth of reasoning, and ability to apply OBM concepts and theories in relation to the case study and assigned theme.

This component is designed to:

  • Ensure individual accountability within a group assessment.
  • Evaluate your ability to justify your analysis, support your solutions and recommendations, and engage with OBM literature and concepts in a meaningful way.
  • Assess your capacity to respond thoughtfully and professionally in real time, demonstrating clarity, insight, and responsiveness to complexity.

You may be asked to:

  • Explain the rationale behind a specific analysis, solution, recommendation or decision.
  • Clarify how a particular OBM theory was interpreted and applied to the case.
  • Respond to alternative viewpoints or hypothetical scenarios that challenge your analysis.
  • Assess the implications of your proposed solutions in broader organisational contexts.

Your responses will be assessed against the Question & Answer Criterion 4 in the marking rubric, which evaluates:

  • Fluency and confidence in verbal communication.
  • Depth and accuracy of OBM knowledge.
  • Integration of theory, evidence, and critical reasoning.
  • Ability to engage with complexity, defend your position, and adapt your thinking when prompted.

Thus, the Viva Voce serves to validate your individual contribution to other dimensions of the assessment, particularly the conceptual understanding and evidence-based reasoning. Your ability to articulate and defend your analysis, solutions and recommendations during the oral examination reinforces the integrity of your work and demonstrates the depth of your engagement with OBM concepts and literature.

Tip: Prepare by revisiting your team’s analysis, reviewing the OBM concepts and literature used, and anticipating questions that invite you to explain, apply, critique, and extend your ideas.

This task will assess your ability to:

  1. Critically analyse OBM issues and apply relevant OBM theories to address the issues.
  2. Bring in various OBM theories/concepts and structure evidence-based conclusions.
  3. Verbally communicate your ideas effectively and professionally by proficiently using various creative digital tools.
  4. Evaluate issues and problems and structure evidence-based conclusions.
  5. Collaborate effectively where individual differences pervade in a team context.
