S3589C Project on Communication and Health Coaching Assignment

  • Citation/Referencing Style: Harvard Referencing
  • Academic Standard Level: Advanced Diploma

PART B: ASSIGNMENT INSTRUCTIONS/ASSIGNMENT TASK

For this Graded Assignment, you are required to apply what you have learnt in this module to a real person who would benefit from changing a health behaviour. You will profile your client, critically evaluate an AI-generated health coaching script, conduct and record a 12-minute Motivational Interviewing (MI) session, and reflect on the use of AI in your preparation. There are 2 parts (Part A and Part B) to this assignment. Refer to the instructions below.

Before You Begin

  • Choosing your client

Select a colleague from your current workplace. If you are not currently working, you may select a family member or a friend.

  • Choosing the target behaviour

The behaviour must be a health behaviour with a clear, evidence-based link to physical or mental health. The client must choose the behaviour; your role is to help them explore it, not to choose it for them.

  • Sequence of tasks

You will speak with your client twice: a short initial conversation (not recorded) to gather client profile and barriers, and a recorded 12-minute Motivational Interview (MI) session to capture the formal health coaching process.

Part A: Report (60%)

CLIENT PROFILIING (20%)

Describe your client’s background, including their demographic profile, occupation, daily routines and the lifestyle factors relevant to the target behaviour. (5%)

Specify the target health behaviour your client desires to achieve using the 5W1H (5%)

Using the COM-B Model, discuss TWO barriers most relevant to your client’s target health behaviour, stating the COM-B component and sub-component each barrier relates to, and supporting each barrier with ONE quote from your conversation with the client. (10%)

Keep this section within 500 words.

COMMUNICATION PLAN (30%)

  1. Use an AI tool of your choice to generate a Motivational Interviewing (MI) coaching script based on your client profile and include your full AI prompt and the AI’s output in the Appendix. (5%)
  2. Critique the AI-generated script by finding ONE example of each OARS technique (Open-ended questions, Affirmations, Reflective listening and Summarize) and explain whether it was used effectively. (15%)
  3. Improve the AI-generated script by choosing 4 sentences and, for each one, writing the i) original AI sentence, ii) your improved proposed sentence, iii) the OARS technique used, and iv) explain why your proposed version is more effective. (10%)

Keep this section within 700 words.

REFLECTION ON USING AI IN HEALTH COACHING (10%)

Compare the AI-generated script with your recorded session and reflect on one strength and one limitation of using AI to prepare for Motivational Interviewing, referring to at least one specific moment from your video recording.

Keep this section within 300 words.

Part B: Video Recording (40%)

MOTIVATIONAL INTERVIEWING DEMONSTRATION (40%)

Record a Motivational Interviewing (MI) session with the same client described in your report. Your video should be approximately 12 minutes long. A suggested flow is as below:

1. Record client’s verbal consent (at the start of the video)

    • Read or adapt the script Your client must clearly say “yes” on the recording. “Before we start, I would like to seek your consent. This recorded interview is for a graded assignment in my health coaching and communication module. The recording will only be seen by the module’s assessors for marking and will not be shared anywhere else. Taking part is voluntary, you can skip any question, and you can stop at any time. Are you alright to proceed and be recorded?”

2. With your client, briefly recap their background and their target health behaviour in the beginning of the video.

3. Demonstrate Motivational Interviewing (MI) to guide your client towards their desired target health behaviour.

Ensure your face is visible throughout the video. Your client may appear off-camera if they prefer/not comfortable.
