By engaging in strategic planning, health organizations can be ready to deal with what might come along the way. Strategic planning is the creation of objectives and setting of goals for where an organization would like to be in the future and then creating a plan for achieving these objectives. The purpose of the paper is to analyze a health organization that spans numerous states within the United States and the readiness of the organization to meet the health care needs of citizens in the coming decade. A description of the health care organization (Banner Health)
Banner Health is one of the largest not-for-profit healthcare organizations in the United States, formed in 1999 after the Lutheran Health System and Samaritan Health System merged. Banner Health has its headquarters in Phoenix Arizona and on and operates thirty hospitals and several other health-related services and entities in six states:   Wyoming, Nevada, Nebraska, Colorado, California, and Arizona. In addition to emergency and basic medical services, Banner Health provides a wide range of specialized services including organ transplants, cancer treatment, heart care, rehabilitation services, bone marrow transplants,  and behavioral health services. Also, Banner Health is a leader in research targeted at medical conditions like Alzheimer’s disease and spinal cord injuries.
A description of the organization’s overall readiness based on findings
Based on my findings, Banner Health is ready to meet the needs of the communities it serves in the coming decade. Throughout its network of hospitals, health clinics and centers, physician practices, laboratories, research centers, and more, Banner Health’s compassionate and skilled employees offer excellent care with the use of the latest research and technology. Environmental Research and Public Health Discussion
Banner is recognized as a leading health system in the United States for the clinical quality consistently offered to patients. In just 23 years, Banner’s employees, patients, and larger communities have worked jointly to change lives. Banner Health’s provider networks currently serve over one million people, and this is a demonstration that Banner is capable of effectively managing the illness and health of populations of patients in both private and government insurance plans in the next ten years.
A strategic plan to address issues pertaining to network growth, nurse staffing, resource management, and patient satisfaction.
Network growth
Mergers and acquisitions are a key growth strategy for Banner Health.  Banner Health was created following the merging of not-for-profits Lutheran Health System and Samaritan Health System. Banner Health envisions acquiring more health systems to continue providing outstanding care to patients and fulfilling its mission of providing high-quality care. Banner Health looks forward to partnering with more physician practices and health facilities to combine strengths with other practices to offer cutting-edge, innovative care to patients and improve its operating surplus and payer mix. Nurse staffing
Banner realizes that nurses are the backbone of any health organization. With the current shortage of nurses, Banner Health is committed to retaining its current nursing workforce and attracting and retaining the most capable, compassionate, and caring nurses through Banner’s wellness in nursing strategy. Banner Health takes a holistic approach to improve nursing since its nurses’ wellness  is crucial to the provision of quality patient care. From creating a more balance in the daily experience of nursing to supporting emotional wellness to integrating nurses into the processes of decision-making, Wellness in Nursing is refurbishing the profession as a whole and transforming the way nurses are supported both as a community and as individuals.  Resource management
Banner Health is devoted to effectively managing resources to enable it to continue expanding its operations and serving communities. As a not-for-profit, Banner, the purpose of Banner is to continue offering excellent healthcare services to communities, rather than making profits. This implies that every dollar that will be earned be reinvested into expanding or new patient care services, new hospital beds, new technologies, maintenance of existing facilities and equipment,  new physician services, and paying staff salaries. Patient satisfaction
Banner Health believes that patient satisfaction is key to the continued growth of the organization. It is an integral part of Banner’s philosophy of making a difference in the lives of individuals via excellent patient care. Banner will continue providing information about the quality of care at hospitals to assist patients to make informed decisions through its Care Management program. Through this program, Banner Health will continue gathering data from each of its 29 hospitals and measuring its performance against preset national standards to improve the way the organization offers patient care. Banner Health will constantly work to improve patient satisfaction by providing reliable, consistent, evidence-based care at all its facilities.
Current or potential issues within the organizational culture and how these issues may affect aspects of the strategic plan
The lack of a standard organizational culture is a potential issue with Banner Health’s organizational culture that might impact strategic plan implementation. Banner Health is composed of several merged health facilities with each facility having a unique culture. Harhash et al. (2020) indicate that organizations are characterizing forums where persons with diverse behaviors, personalities, abilities, and backgrounds work jointly as a cooperative unit to achieve certain objectives. Each organization, have a definite culture that is founded on assumptions, expectation, beliefs, values, and practices. Organizational culture is the system of shared beliefs, values, and actions that develop within an organization and guide members’ behavior. Healthcare organizational culture plays a crucial role in the success of the change process and primary constituent of the functional making of decisions in the organization. Environmental Research and Public Health Discussion
Culture has a greater influence on the potential failure or success of Banner Health’s strategic plan than nearly any other factor. This is because Banner health has grown through mergers and acquisitions and the merging of one health organization with another can generate numerous unintended consequences like the inevitable culture clash. Cultural misalignment can limit Banner Health from implementing a strategic plan due to low employee morale and patient safety risks. Harhash et al. (2020) posit that organizational culture can reinforce job satisfaction, and organizational performance, and promote a sense of sureness in solving problems. If an organizational culture becomes incongruent with the changing expectations of internal stakeholders, the effectiveness of the organization can decline.
A model that could be used to support the implementation of the strategic plan for the organization and why this model is the best
The balanced scorecard (BSC) is a model that can be utilized to support the implementation of the strategic plan for Banner Health. BSC can be utilized as a strategic managerial tool by linking it to Banner Health’s strategy. According to Betto et al. (2022), the BSC is a model for supporting strategy implementation and measuring performance. BSC supports the alignment of the organization’s strategy, vision, and mission to action through leveraging performance measurement. The BSC translates an organization’s strategy into measurable objectives, and thus the core of BSC is the vision and strategy of the organization. Environmental Research and Public Health Discussion
BSC is the best model for Banner Health since it can help the merged organizations to achieve the strategy. The BSC can help Banner Health leaders overcome cultural misalignment across organizations and providers that were previously independent, and enable them to become better aligned to the new strategy of delivering higher value for communities, patients, and staff. The BSC can enable Banner’s merging healthcare facilities to translate the novel strategy into a balanced set of performance metrics. According to Kaplan (2020), senior managers can utilize the BSC to communicate the new strategy to all staff; align the day-to-day work of employees to strategic priorities;  and monitor, assess and reward staff performance. With the BSC, managers from merging health facilities can achieve clearness on their shared goals and expected synergies that will assist them in translating their intentions into practice.
