My area of interest is the effectiveness of alcohol-based hand rubs in reducing nosocomial infections in healthcare workers. My PICOT question is: In healthcare workers, does the use of alcohol-based hand rubs compared to traditional handwashing with soap and water reduce the incidence of nosocomial infections? This question is particularly pertinent to healthcare settings, where infection control and prevention are paramount for protecting patients and healthcare workers alike. Nosocomial infections, which occur in a healthcare setting, can be especially dangerous due to the weakened condition of the patients and the spread of antibiotic resistant organisms (Timothy et al., 2021). Alcohol-based hand rubs are a quick, convenient, and effective way to reduce the risk of nosocomial infections, as they are able to kill a wide variety of microorganisms on the hands (Tse et al., 2021). While traditional handwashing with soap and water is effective, it is not as quick or convenient, making it more difficult to maintain proper hand hygiene in busy healthcare settings. I used the search terms “alcohol-based hand rubs”, “hand hygiene”, “nosocomial infections” and “healthcare workers” to search for research on the topic. I used the databases PubMed and CINAHL to conduct my search. In my initial search, PubMed yielded 6,717 results and CINAHL yielded 1,105 results. After I employed Boolean operators, my search yielded 3,749 results in PubMed and 863 results in CINAHL. To increase the rigor of my search, I used a combination of research filters such as date range, publication type, language and subject. I also used the advanced search option in both databases to refine my search further by using “AND” and “OR” operators. Also, I used the “related articles” feature in both databases to find additional relevant studies.
