Importance of Nursing Theory Paper with Application

Assessment 1: Importance of Nursing Theory and Application to Practice

Course: Advanced Nursing Theory and Practice (Graduate Level)

Assessment Type: Individual Written Essay

Length: 5–7 pages (excluding title and reference pages)

Weighting: 100 marks

Due Date: Sunday 11:59 PM (End of Week 2)

Assessment Overview

This assessment examines the role and value of nursing theory in professional practice. You are required to select one established nursing theory and critically analyse its contribution to the discipline. The task also requires application of the theory to a specific area of professional nursing practice.

The paper must demonstrate analytical depth, clarity of thought, and alignment with scholarly nursing literature. The selected theory must be a recognised nursing theory; categories such as “grand theory” are not acceptable as standalone selections.

Learning Outcomes Assessed

  • Analyse nursing theories in relation to their structure, logic, and application.
  • Apply theoretical frameworks to professional nursing practice.
  • Demonstrate advanced academic writing and critical thinking skills.

Task Instructions

1. Introduction (Approx. ½ page)

  • Provide general statements about the role of theory in nursing.
  • Clearly identify the selected nursing theory (e.g., Orem’s Self-Care Deficit Theory, Roy’s Adaptation Model, Benner’s Novice to Expert Theory).
  • Outline the structure of the paper.
  • Support statements with scholarly nursing literature.

2. Importance of Nursing Theory (Approx. 1–1.5 pages)

Critically address the following:

  • Rationale for including nursing theory in graduate-level education.
  • Contribution of theory to professional nursing practice.
  • How theory differentiates nursing from other health professions.
  • One limitation or concern related to the use of nursing theory.

All claims must be supported by current peer-reviewed sources.

3. Summary of Selected Nursing Theory (Approx. 1.5–2 pages)

  • Name of theory and theorist.
  • Year of initial publication and most recent update.
  • Key concepts and relationships within the theory.
  • Explanation of the four metaparadigm concepts:
    • Person
    • Health
    • Environment
    • Nursing
  • Justification for selecting the theory and its relevance to your chosen specialty track.

4. Application to Professional Practice Area (Approx. 1.5–2 pages)

Select ONE of the following areas:

  • Education
  • Leadership
  • Informatics
  • Healthcare Policy
  • Nurse Practitioner Practice

Then:

  • Explain how the theory informs or shapes practice in that area.
  • Provide two examples:
    • Examples may come from clinical experience or literature.
    • Use first person if describing personal experience.
    • Each example should be concise (1–3 paragraphs).

5. Conclusion (Approx. ½–1 page)

  • Summarise key insights about nursing theory.
  • Restate the value of the selected theory.
  • Provide a brief personal reflection on learning gained.

Formatting Requirements

  • APA 6th or 7th edition formatting (confirm with instructor preference).
  • Minimum of 4 scholarly, peer-reviewed nursing sources (published within last 5 years).
  • No use of textbooks or non-scholarly websites (.com sources discouraged).
  • Formal academic writing style required.
  • Submit via Turnitin with similarity index below 24%.

Sample High-Scoring Response

Nursing theory provides a structured way of understanding patient care beyond routine clinical actions. Orem’s Self-Care Deficit Theory frames nursing as a response to individuals’ inability to meet their own care needs, which remains relevant in both acute and community settings. The theory identifies self-care, self-care deficit, and nursing systems as its central concepts, linking patient autonomy with professional intervention. Within advanced nursing practice, the theory supports decision-making by clarifying when intervention is necessary and when patient independence should be encouraged. Evidence suggests that theory-guided care improves patient outcomes and consistency in practice (Younas, 2017, https://doi.org/10.1016/j.ijnurstu.2017.03.001). In my clinical experience, applying Orem’s framework helped prioritise patient education in chronic disease management, particularly in diabetes care where self-management is essential.

A closer reading of recent literature indicates that theory-based practice may reduce variability in care delivery while strengthening professional identity. For instance, a study in the Journal of Advanced Nursing noted that nurses who consistently applied theoretical frameworks demonstrated stronger clinical reasoning and patient-centred outcomes. At the same time, some scholars argue that rigid adherence to theory may limit adaptability in complex care environments. This tension suggests that theory should guide rather than dictate practice, allowing room for clinical judgement. In graduate education, engaging critically with theory appears necessary for developing advanced competencies rather than relying solely on procedural knowledge.

Assessment 2: Concept Analysis Paper (6–8 pages, 250 marks)

This assignment requires selection of a single nursing concept such as resilience, self-care, or comfort, grounded in a specific nursing theory. Students will conduct a structured concept analysis including defining attributes, antecedents, consequences, and empirical referents. The task also includes constructing model, borderline, and contrary cases, followed by theoretical application to advanced nursing practice. Emphasis is placed on synthesis of literature and analytical reasoning.
