This can only be achieved when individuals have a true perception of who they are as a person.

Reflection is a key part of building leadership skills and interprofessional relationships. It allows you to look critically at experiences and actions through specific lenses. Reflection can help you consider potential reasons and causes of people’s actions and behaviors and allow you to think about how to respond appropriately. This is vital because nurses are often at the frontlines of interacting with various other disciplines and are considered full partners when approaching healthcare of patients.

As you begin to prepare this assessment you are encouraged to complete the What is Reflective Practice? activity. The activity consists of five questions that will allow you the opportunity to practice self-reflection. Interprofessional collaboration is vital in healthcare since patient care entails different professionals working together in teamwork. Leadership is also essential in promoting interprofessional collaboration, ensuring coordination and seamless communication to promote teamwork. Various best-practice and interprofessional collaboration strategies enable a team to work together. This Paper reflects on an interdisciplinary collaboration experience I have observed, provides a comparison of effective and ineffective leadership, identifies best-practice leadership strategies that would improve an interdisciplinary team’s ability to achieve its goal, best-practice interdisciplinary collaboration strategies to achieve team goals and work together, and describes a leadership style to develop to support best-practice strategies better.

One of the interprofessional collaboration experiences entailed developing a leadership training program for staff in my practice setting, aiming to prepare them to collaborate more effectively and efficiently. The experience achieved the desired outcomes in several ways, including team involvement, engagement and participation, and impact on team collaboration.

The program was developed with input from nurses, physicians, educators, and administrators, providing diversity in the program’s content. In addition, there was high participation, and the program led to better communication and collaboration within disciplines, which was a success. However, there was inadequate follow-up and resistance to change, which were the major challenges in achieving the desired outcomes.

According to Patel and Metersky (2022), reflective practice in nursing entails consciously looking at situations to learn from the experience and incorporate learning into improving patient outcomes. Reflective nursing practice can help build a better understanding and improve future practice decisions by identifying what worked well and what did not through reflection, assessing interventions to recommend future adjustments for improvement, and identifying gaps in teamwork to propose proactive improvements to address the gaps.

There is a clear distinction between effective and ineffective leadership in aspects such as communication, conflict resolution, and motivation and support. Characterizing effective leadership are such traits as communication that is clear, transparent, and two-way, which is not the case in ineffective leadership, which has poor communication that leads to misunderstanding and confusion. Effective leadership uses best practice strategies such as mediation and open dialogue to resolve conflicts, while ineffective leadership avoids conflicts. In addition, effective leadership inspires, mentors, and provides professional growth opportunities for the team, while ineffective leadership neglects team development.

Various best-practice leadership strategies exist to help a healthcare team achieve its goals and work more effectively. These strategies include structured communication frameworks, regular interdisciplinary team meetings, feedback and performance evaluations, and shared goal-setting and decision-making. Effective communication using structured communication frameworks such as the Situation, Background, Assessment, and Recommendation (SBAR) has been found to improve interprofessional team effectiveness in healthcare settings (McLaney et al., 2022).

In addition, regular interdisciplinary team meetings enable the team to achieve its goals by facilitating alignment on patient care goals, progress, and role clarification. Bornman and Louw (2023) also note that feedback and performance evaluation encourage an interprofessional team’s continuous learning through structured feedback sessions, enabling it to meet its goals effectively. More so, collective goal-setting and decision-making enable the team to achieve their goals by ensuring each member understands the goals and expectations, guiding collaborative efforts (McLaney et al., 2022).

One of the leadership styles that one can develop to support best-practice strategies is the transformational leadership style. According to Broome (2024), the transformational leadership style entails leading by motivating and influencing others to become better. The leadership style effectively supports best practice strategies for interprofessional collaboration since it motivates and inspires the team and builds strong relationships to enhance teamwork. To develop transformational leadership, a leader should encourage autonomy and accountability to empower team members, provide continuous education and mentorship to enhance team competency, and build team trust through active listening and empathy.
