Wu (2021) defines telehealth as the use of digital information and communication technologies, including video conferencing, mobile devices, and computers, to provide and access healthcare services remotely and manage patient care.
The technology has been embraced in nursing to extend care delivery beyond in-person visits, enabling nurses to monitor patients, provide patient education, conduct assessments and coordinate care without geographical constraints, while patients receive the benefits from the comfort of their homes. I selected to focus on telehealth technology due to its growing use in healthcare, especially in response to challenges such as an increase in the aging population and increased demand for chronic disease management.
Telehealth technology interests me due to its ability to enhance both quality and safety standards in nursing practice, while offering real-time monitoring, facilitating timely interventions, and improving access to care. To further explore the topic, I employed a structured research process through databases such as Google Scholar, PubMed, and Cochrane Library to identify reputable peer-reviewed sources. I used keywords and Boolean operators “telehealth AND nursing,” “telehealth AND quality of care,” “remote monitoring AND patient safety,”and“technology AND nursing outcomes” in my search strategy.
