You must write a case study report that explores the role of the hippocampus, and medial temporal lobe in relation to Alzheimer’s Disease (AD), and how damage could result in the cognitive and behavioural symptoms that Mr. R is presenting with in the case study below:
Mr R’s Case: A 68-year-old individual (known as Mr. R) has been diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease (AD), with impairments to his hippocampus, as well as the medial temporal lobe. Mr. R’s neuroimaging scans have also revealed white matter and grey matter abnormalities, in addition to brain atrophy. Mr. R has presented with symptoms of impaired cognitive functioning, such as memory loss and executive functioning deficits, in addition to mood related disruptions. Mr. R has no history of other health related conditions. Mr. R’s wife is worried about the diagnosis; however, she has been told that there are possible ways to manage his symptoms. Below is a recommended structure for your report. Note that the word counts (or timings for presentations) below are a suggestion only. You do not need to use the sub-headings of Introduction, Main Body and Summary and conclusion in your report. Throughout your report, you should use cited scientific evidence to support your points. Assignment guidance and support can be found on the ‘My Assessment’ tab of the module iLearn page. 4 [2397] Arden University © reserves all rights of copyright and all other intellectual property rights in the learning materials and this publication. Introduction (200 words/1-2 minutes): In this section, you must include the following information:
• Provide a short overview of the case study
• Outline the main topics that you will cover in the main body of your report. o You are likely to have a focus on AD, brain structures of interest, cognitive deficits, behavioural deficits, and symptom management, so mentioning these focuses within the introduction would be recommended. o To push further, consider outlining how biological psychology can aid our understanding of this area.
• You should leave the reader with a clear sense of what will be covered Main body (2100 words/8-10 minutes): In this section, you must include the following information:
• The biological psychology that relates to the case study. Specifically, how the reported brain regions (hippocampus and medial temporal lobe) are impacted by AD, with reflection back to cognition and behaviour (e.g., memory loss, executive functioning deficits, and mood related disruptions).
• Draw upon as much of the case study’s information as possible, and link back to the case regularly as you make your points.
• Describe the methodologies (e.g., brain imaging methods) used in studies that investigate brain regions associated with AD.
• Provide an explanation of biologically based symptom management options for AD, linking back to the case. Support your discussion with relevant historical and contemporary theories and research. You are encouraged to break the main body up into subsections and you can use sub-headings for this. 5 [2397] Arden University © reserves all rights of copyright and all other intellectual property rights in the learning materials and this publication. Learning outcomes (LO) By completing this assessment, you will have shown and be assessed on all four of the learning outcomes:
1. LO 1. Describe and discuss historical and contemporary factors in biological psychology
2. LO 2. Explain multiple perspectives, research methods, theories in biological psychology.
3. LO 3. Identify the relevance of biology in behaviour and cognition
4. LO 4. Interpret scientific evidence to support your work. You will be graded based on how well you meet these learning outcomes. Your marker will use a rubric to grade your work, and you can find this on the “My Assessment” tab on the module iLearn page.
