Black Lives Matter, racial equality and jazz music have become somewhat intertwined, with the three facets impacting things. For example, according to Philipp (2019), Jazz music became rooted and an institution for African Americans to express their lives, stories, and attitudes. Regarding exploring the three topics, they are hardly separated and were key to shaping the African American culture and society at large. This paper provides an essay responding to the interconnectedness of jazz music, black lives matter (BLM) and racial equality.
Feelings About Black Lives Matter
The BLM is a movement which was established as a counter to police brutality against black people. My feelings about the movement are linked to the search for justice, solidarity and empathy towards black Americans. In addition to responding to black Americans’ demand for justice and the fight against police brutality, the movement also focuses on addressing racism and social injustices as major vices faced by back communities (Sonnett, 2020). The movement is, in turn, a call to recognize the dignity and humanity that blacks deserve, which resonates very well with me. Through studying Jazz music, I have gained an in-depth understanding and appreciation of the interconnectedness among artists with diverse backgrounds. Jazz thrives on unity, respect, collective improvisation and teamwork among different performers. Studying Jazz has been key towards understanding and appreciating the input of different musicians, hence fostering a view on the richness and diversity that is comprised in the history and richness of Jazz music (Sonnett, 2020). Some of the covered jazz music has indeed contributed to changing the view and understanding of racial equality. The artists have addressed diverse social and political issues through their music, advocating for equality and justice.
