The Thompson family consists of four members: Marta (35), Miguel (37), and their two children, Sara (7) and Ethan (4). The family lives in a modest apartment in Chicago, where they have been managing to get by on Marta’s job as a cashier and Miguel’s job in construction. However, things have recently become much more difficult.
Six months ago, Ethan was diagnosed with a chronic illness that requires frequent hospital visits, often involving overnight stays. This diagnosis has placed an enormous strain on the family, both emotionally and financially. As a result, Miguel lost his job due to the time he needed to take off to care for Ethan and attend hospital appointments. Marta’s income alone has not been enough to cover all the bills, especially with the added cost of medical expenses and transportation to the hospital.
Current Situation
The health crisis has had significant effects on the family’s overall well-being:
Parental Stress and Time Constraints: Marta is the primary breadwinner and has taken on the responsibility of transporting Ethan to and from the hospital. This has left her feeling overwhelmed, as she has little time to rest. Meanwhile, Miguel, who has been unable to find another stable job, stays at home, looking after Sara, managing household chores, and trying to make ends meet with odd jobs. This has resulted in a major imbalance in the household roles and responsibilities, and both parents feel exhausted, both physically and mentally.
Nutrition and Meal Planning: Due to the hectic schedule and financial constraints, the family has fallen into the habit of relying on fast food and processed meals. While it is convenient and affordable, these meals are not nutritious and contribute to the family’s overall poor health. Marta and Miguel are aware of the negative impacts of these eating habits but struggle to find time to prepare healthier meals or grocery shop due to the ongoing crisis.
Irregular Sleep Schedules: The stress of hospital visits and Miguel’s sporadic work hours has led to irregular bedtimes for the children. Sometimes Sara and Ethan fall asleep late because the family is still trying to handle last-minute tasks or because Marta is returning home from a long hospital visit. The lack of consistent sleep schedules has affected their energy levels and their ability to focus at school, further adding to the family’s stress.
Increased Screen Time: As the parents try to manage the housework and caregiving responsibilities, the children often end up spending long hours in front of the TV. Miguel is concerned about the increase in screen time and worries that the children rarely play and they never get opportunities to play outside.
Challenges to Overall Health and Well-Being
The Thompson family’s overall health and well-being are severely impacted by a combination of financial strain, emotional distress, and time scarcity. The health crisis with Ethan has placed the family in survival mode, leaving little room for self-care or healthy habits. Key challenges include:
Physical Health: The reliance on fast food, lack of nutritious meals, and inconsistent sleep schedules are contributing to poor physical health for both the parents and children.
Mental and Emotional Health: The constant stress from the medical crisis, financial instability, and demanding household responsibilities has left the parents feeling overwhelmed and anxious. The children are also affected by the emotional toll and the lack of consistent structure in their lives.
Lack of Routine and Structure: The irregular bedtimes, frequent hospital visits, and screen time for the children have created a chaotic and unstructured environment at home, which impacts everyone’s well-being.
