INTENDED LEARNING OUTCOMES:
By the end of this course, successful students should be able to:
1. Critically define a research question and hypothesis
2. Develop a thorough literature review which uses peer reviewed journals and scientific publications.
AIMS OF THE MODULE:
The course aims to:
● Distinguishing a business problem from a research problem;
● Explaining the relationship between a theoretical construct and an empirically tested theory.
● Critically using research terms in a scientific research process.
● Adequately putting together a literature review by assessing and critiquing scientific and reputable specialistic sources
● Describing and comparing the major quantitative and qualitative research methods in business research.
● Structuring a research design with appropriate methodology, sampling and measurement. ● Understanding the importance of research ethics and integrating research ethics into the research process.
ASSIGNMENT DESCRIPTION:
Reframing Strategic Business Problems Through a
Sustainability
Lens In
today’s competitive and rapidly changing global environment, businesses
are
increasingly challenged to balance
profitability with environmental and social
responsibility.
Traditional strategy models often prioritise short-term growth and
efficiency; however, reframing strategic problems through the lens of
sustainability allows organisations to identify innovative solutions that create
long-term value for both business and society.
Your task
in this assignment is to develop a research proposal that explores how
strategic business problems can be reframed to integrate sustainability
principles. You will not conduct empirical research but must design a
structured and academically grounded research plan that demonstrates how
organisations can apply sustainability thinking to redefine their strategic
challenges and decision-making processes.
This assignment evaluates
your ability to apply research methodology concepts to complex business
strategy issues, demonstrating critical reasoning, analytical skills, and
awareness of global sustainability trends.
Key Objectives
1.Research Question & Hypothesis (20% of the mark)
○Formulate a clear and
focused research question on how sustainability can reshape strategic
business decision-making.
2.Literature Review (20% of the mark)
○ Conduct a critical review of current academic and
professional literature on sustainability in strategic management.
○ Identify key frameworks (e.g., Triple Bottom Line,
Circular Economy, ESG) and theoretical gaps your proposed study could
address.
3.Methodology (20% of the mark)
○Propose an appropriate
qualitative, quantitative, or mixed-methods design.
○ Outline
how data could be collected and analysed (e.g., case studies, surveys,
sustainability reports, or interviews with strategic managers).
○ Explain how your chosen
methods align with your research
objectives.
4. Challenges & Limitations (20%
of the mark)
○ Discuss potential limitations, such as access to corporate data, bias in sustainability reporting, or difficulties in measuring long-term impact.
○ Suggest realistic strategies for addressing these challenges.
5. Conclusion (20% of the mark)
○ Summarise the expected contribution of your proposed research to strategic management and sustainability practices.
○ Highlight how reframing business problems through sustainability can lead to more resilient and innovative organisations.
YOU DO NOT NEED TO CONDUCT THE ACTUAL DATA GATHERING FOR THE
RESEARCH, JUST THE RESEARCH DESIGN AND ADDITIONAL ADVANTAGES AND RISK ANALYSIS AND RESEARCH GUIDELINES

STRUCTURE AND FORMAT OF THE ASSIGNMENT:
This is an individual assignment.
Make sure your writing is precise and to the point. Your paper should not exceed 2000 +/-10% words per student, excluding appendices and references.
Format of the assignment:
1. The assignment should display a coherent structure: the title page should include the students’ matriculation number, module name, lecturer name, date and school name followed by a contents page, executive summary, introduction, methodology, findings, analysis, conclusions/recommendations, in-text referencing, bibliography and appendices.
2. The assignment should be prepared as a neatly typed Word document (Arial 12 points), with double spacing and page numbering.
3. Tables or work/data taken from other sources may be included in an appendix.
4. All sources must be referenced in the text and a full bibliography must be provided (including visited websites) in the Harvard style referencing system. Paraphrasing or direct quotes taken from other sources must be clearly indicated with citations. No footnoting!
5. Students are reminded that depth, relevance and variety are the crucial elements of quality research. (Wikipedia is not considered to be a relevant source of information; any students referencing Wikipedia will be deducted marks! Alternatively, if you find information on Wikipedia use the original sources listed at the bottom of the article)
6. Students are reminded to use valid and peer-reviewed references to support their work. Websites should only be used if they represent an established source and only for facts and figures. Students should make the most of academic and practitioner books and articles.

Coursework must be submitted for assessment by the due date. Coursework is deemed to have been submitted once it is lodged in accordance with the assessment requirements for the module or unit.
Late submission:
Submission of coursework arising from reassessment may not be submitted late.
If you fail to submit an electronic version of your work, your mark will normally be recorded as a non-submission. However, if on the due date for your assignment, Turnitin is unavailable due to technical difficulties, students must submit the electronic version of their work as soon as possible to the academic Office. Your tutor will be aware of the situation and may well have informed you of such problems, so you will not risk penalties.
