Item 2
Scenario:
The mission of The Growing Place Child Development Center ensures that all infant/toddler staff understand the integral role of relationships and attachment in healthy development. Young children are placed in groups with the same primary caregivers, as much as possible, throughout the time they are enrolled at the center. Rather than evaluate children only in specific areas of development, staff are encouraged to share examples with family members of how children are growing and learning in each of the developmental domains while also sharing with families the general knowledge of the developmental continuum. This information forms the basis for designing learning experiences and frames staff interactions with children. When a family member expresses concern that his/her child is not progressing as quickly as other children, staff take time to explain who the child is as an individual with respect for his or her unique strengths and challenges.
Analyze, using examples, how four of the NAEYC DAP Position Statement: “Principles of Child Development and Learning and Implications That Inform Practice” are informing the practice at The Growing Place. (2–3 paragraphs)

You have just been hired to be the director of a new early childhood center and will be meeting with a few families and staff members to talk about the values and goals of the program. Before you meet, you want to gather your thoughts about your program philosophy, which is based on two guidelines from the NAEYC DAP Position Statement: “Creating a Caring, Equitable Community of Learners” and “Teaching to Enhance Each Child’s Development and Learning.” Explain these guidelines so that staff and family not only understand what they mean to program philosophy but can also visualize them in practice. In your former director job, staff sometimes protested when you wanted to involve families in the program. They felt strongly that their program was theirs, and the teachers knew what was best for the children. In your current role as the director of a new center, you have the opportunity to involve families from the beginning. Analyze three ways the NAEYC DAP Position Statement: “Engaging in Reciprocal Partnerships with Families and Fostering Community Connections” will inform the way you interact, beginning with this first meeting, with family and staff members in order to promote respectful, reciprocal relationships.
