contemporary issues teenagers face

Teenagers today face a wide range of challenges that can affect their physical, emotional, social, and academic well-being. Adolescence is an important stage of life because young people are developing their identities, becoming more independent, forming relationships, and preparing for adulthood. At the same time, they may experience pressure from school, family, friends, social media, and society. Some of the major contemporary issues affecting teenagers include bullying and cyberbullying, substance and alcohol use, body image and eating disorders, academic and peer pressure, sexual health, poverty, family conflict, discrimination, excessive social media use, and mental health problems. Of these issues, mental health is particularly important because it can affect almost every area of a teenager’s life and may lead a student to seek help from a school health clinic.

Mental health problems among adolescents are a significant global health concern. The World Health Organization (WHO) estimates that approximately one in seven young people between the ages of 10 and 19 experiences a mental health condition. Anxiety, depression, and behavioral disorders are among the leading causes of illness and disability among adolescents.

Social media and digital technology have created another contemporary challenge. Although social media can help teenagers communicate, maintain friendships, and find supportive communities, excessive or problematic use can have negative consequences. A WHO report found that problematic social media use among adolescents in the surveyed European, Central Asian, and Canadian populations increased from 7% in 2018 to 11% in 2022. The report also linked problematic social media behavior with concerns including depression, bullying, anxiety, and poorer academic performance. Social media can expose teenagers to cyberbullying, unrealistic standards of appearance, negative comments, and constant comparisons with other people. These experiences may contribute to low self-esteem, anxiety, loneliness, or depression.

Mental health is therefore an issue that a teenager might reasonably discuss with a nurse at a high school health clinic. A student may not initially say, “I have a mental health problem.” Instead, the student might visit the nurse because of headaches, stomachaches, tiredness, difficulty sleeping, loss of appetite, difficulty concentrating, or frequent feelings of being overwhelmed. These physical symptoms can sometimes occur alongside anxiety or depression. A teenager may also approach a nurse after experiencing bullying, relationship problems, family difficulties, academic stress, or feelings of loneliness.

A school nurse can play an important role in identifying students who may need additional support. The nurse can provide a safe and nonjudgmental environment in which a teenager can explain what they are experiencing. The nurse may ask questions about the student’s physical health, emotions, sleep, relationships, school life, and safety. Depending on the situation, the nurse may provide basic health education, help the student develop healthy coping strategies, communicate with appropriate school personnel, or refer the teenager to a counselor, psychologist, doctor, or other mental health professional. Early identification is important because WHO and UNICEF emphasize that mental health conditions often begin during childhood or adolescence and that early action can help young people reach their full potential. WHO and UNICEF release guidance to improve access to mental health care for children and young people

Schools are particularly important settings for addressing adolescent mental health because students spend a large part of their lives there. Creating supportive relationships between students and trusted adults can encourage teenagers to seek help before a problem becomes more serious. The CDC reports that in 2023, four in ten U.S. high school students experienced persistent feelings of sadness or hopelessness, while two in ten seriously considered attempting suicide. The CDC also emphasizes the importance of strong connections with family, school, and other supportive adults in protecting adolescent mental health. Although these statistics describe U.S. students and should not automatically be applied to teenagers in every country, they demonstrate the seriousness of adolescent mental health as a contemporary health issue.

Teenagers can also take steps to protect their mental well-being. Regular physical activity, sufficient sleep, healthy eating, spending time with supportive friends and family, limiting unhealthy social media use, and developing healthy ways to manage stress can all contribute to better well-being. Most importantly, teenagers should understand that asking for help is not a sign of weakness. Talking to a trusted adult, school nurse, counselor, parent, teacher, or health professional can be an important first step.

In conclusion, teenagers face numerous contemporary issues, including academic pressure, bullying, social media challenges, substance use, body image concerns, family problems, discrimination, sexual health concerns, and mental health difficulties. Mental health stands out as an issue that a teenager might bring directly to a school nurse because its symptoms can affect both emotional and physical health. Anxiety, depression, stress, loneliness, and related problems can interfere with education, relationships, and daily life. School nurses and other health professionals can help by listening without judgment, identifying warning signs, providing appropriate information, and connecting students with further support. Addressing mental health early can help teenagers manage present challenges and build healthier lives as they move into adulthood.
