MLA Guidelines

·        Type your composition in a Word document.

o   Double-space the text of your paper using Times New Roman as a font.

o   The font size should be 12 pt.

·        Set the margins of your document to 1 inch on all sides.

·        Indent the first line of paragraphs with a tab or five spaces.

·        Create a header that numbers all pages in the upper right-hand corner with your last name and page number 0.5 inches from the top.

·        If you need further information, refer to the MLA Format in Module 0.

The First Page

·        Do not make a title page.

·        In the upper left-hand corner of the first page, type your name, your instructor’s name, the course, and the date. Double-spaced the information.

·        Double space once and center your created title. Do not underline, italicize, or place your title in quotation marks.

·        Use quotation marks for short stories and articles. 

Writing Prompt:  Considering your reading of “The New Jim Crow” and the author’s observation that more Black men are imprisoned today than at any other moment in our nation’s history, do you know anyone who is incarcerated? If so, what is the accused crime? How long has he/she been incarcerated? How long is the sentence? How is this person’s disposition (hopeful, depressed, doubtful)?

Supporting Evidence: Make sure you incorporate quotations from your primary source and one to two secondary sources in your composition if you need to do so.  These sources must be documented within the body of your essay and on a Works CitedLinks to an external site. page. Do not pad your essay with multiple or excessively lengthy quotations. Do not allow your use of quotations to overshadow your own voice. The composition should consist largely of your ideas and assertions. Do not include statistical data or percentages.

Length requirement: Two typed, double-spaced pages is the requirement, at least 700 words. (Proofread and edit the document to ensure it is grammatically correct.)

thesis statement is present making a focused claim, assertion, or persuasive
