1 Current scholars have pointed out that there may not be a need for General Education requirements in college. In the UK and Europe, most undergraduate colleges only take three years to complete, as students focus predominantly on their majors. Those who believe that general education requirements should remain argue that they enhance analytical skills, creative thinking, written and oral communication skills, in addition to ethical reasoning and intercultural knowledge. Most importantly, they suggest that in today’s political climate, students need opportunities for civic engagement that they may not get in their major classes. Also, general education courses give students an opportunity to explore courses before determining their majors and give them a bit more freedom to experience other subjects. In opposition, there are those who think that general ed requirements are a waste of time. They delay graduation, increase student debt, and often just repeat high school curricula. Students could spend more time learning in their major, rather than taking courses that may not help with future job prospects. In a five-paragraph essay, discuss three reasons why you support or oppose general education requirements.
