 AI Limitations Assignment Instructions

 Overview

AI can be an excellent tool, when it is paired with critical thinking, patience, and the willingness to double check feedback. The purpose of this assignment is to explore the limitations and potential ethical concerns of AI use.

Instructions

For this assignment, you must actively engage/test an AI system regarding a topic you know well. It is recommended that you use Microsoft CoPilot and login using your LU credentials. As you engage this AI system you are looking for specific limitations in the AI’s responses (e.g., inaccuracies, hallucinations, shallow reasoning, repetition, changing answers).

1.     Choose a topic of familiarity and preferably one related to your studies or vocation in the health sciences.

2.     Have a conversation with CoPilot by asking it to provide constructive feedback, explanations, or assistance related to the topic you’ve chosen.

a.      Ask follow-up questions. Challenge its responses and/or critique its conclusions.

b.     Request clarifications, examples, and/or alternative explanations.

c.      Ask for references to support the response.

d.     Adjust your response based on what it provides.

3.     Continue the conversation until saturation. In qualitative research, researchers study a phenomenon through interviews and focus groups. The goal of qualitative research is to continue interviewing until saturation of data is research (e.g., until nothing new is added from additional interviews for the researchers understanding of the to the phenomenon). Continue engaging/interviewing CoPilot until you’ve reached conversation/data saturation. This may come across as repetitive or looping responses, vague or generic answers, non-answers, contradictory answers, or a noticeable lack of new/useful insight. It is expected that this should require at least 10-12 Question-Answer cycles (but perhaps more).

Submission

In a separate document using APA format, fill out the table below and then respond to the reflection questions. Your reflection should identify and explain any strengths or limitations you observed in your conversation with the AI. Cite specific statements or components of the conversation. Reflect on how your own prompts influenced the quality of the AI’s responses. Connect your observations to your role as a student/professional with particular focus on accuracy, ethics, researcher responsibility, and the onus of research verification.

Reflection:

1.     What does your conversation reveal about the strengths and limitations of AI and how should this inform your use of AI within your work as a student and professional? (minimum 500 words).

2.     Based on the Principles of Ethical Conduct in Research listed on pages 17-18 in Shamoo and Resnik (2022), which ethical principles do you foresee the use of AI conflicting with leading to ethical challenges or ethical misconduct? Choose at least two principles to discuss (minimum 500 words).

3.     Based on the truth found in the Bible, do you feel like AI can be used ethically regarding the ethical principles you chose? Support your views by using a verse found in the book of Proverbs (minimum 200 words).

Additional Instructions

·       Each reflection question response should meet the minimum word count noted.

·       Your paper should include a minimum of three peer-reviewed sources and one biblical source. Theological analysis cannot simply be a biblical reference without textual commentary/analysis. Do not force the theological reflections, but ground them in evidential, textual, and exegetical reflection.

·       Microsoft CoPilot should only be used for the initial portion of the assignment. AI should NOT be used to respond to the reflection questions.
