SH6055QA Module Title : Mental Health & Wellbeing In the assessment, students must meet the following learning outcomes:

Understand and discuss concepts related to mental health and well-being Apply and critically discuss mental health models and theories in relation to relevant case studies Critically analyse and evaluate mental health policy Identify and discuss current challenges in mental health provision and practice Critically reflect upon the role of values, attitudes, and ethics in mental health provision, practice and policy Outline of assessment task:

Essay questions:

What are the implications of the UK mental health funding crisis? Critically discuss and evaluate current government interventions in mental health provision in light of key literature. What more can be done to prevent male suicide? Discuss using relevant literature and policy. How can the settings approach to mental health promotion in schools help improve child and adolescent mental health? Discuss using relevant literature and policy. How does racism and discrimination affect the mental health of ethnic minorities in the UK today, and how can this be combatted? Discuss using relevant literature and policy.

Students must choose ONE essay question of the above.

Suggested structure of the assessment:

Introduction and signposting to the contents of the essay Outline necessary definitions and key terms Provide relevant background information on the topic (extent of issue, epidemiology, key statistics) Identify and critically discuss the relevant mental health policy and/or legislation Set forward your answer to the essay question, applying key theory and literature to justify and explain your thinking and conclusions – this is where you can show your application of the explanatory models, or critiques of current approaches to mental health and mental healthcare (this should be considered the ‘main event’ of your essay in terms of focus and word count) Conclude on your essay answer and reflect critically on future challenges in relation to the essay topic The above is a suggested structure based on the Learning Outcomes of the module. Depending on your choice of assessment question, there might be other relevant topics to include. Ensure you do wide reading and consult with your tutor and the academic mentor in the development of your essay.

You can focus your essay on any country of your choice (with the exception of question a which requires a UK focus) – this needs to be explicit throughout your work. If you are choosing a country outside the UK, please ensure you are certain that you have sufficient literature, research and data to base your essay on.

The assessment is an essay and should be structured with this in mind. The work should be written in a coherent manner which clearly shows your thinking, argument, and evidence, without relying on supporting subheadings, tables, bullet points, or graphs. You must provide a clear answer to your essay question.
