Step-by-Step Instructions 1. Refine Your Research Questions Re-examine your Paper Prospectus and/or Invention Activity #1 research questions. Make sure they include the opposing side. List the key questions you need answered about the opposition. Use the PENTAD to help: Who, What, Where/Context, How/Means, Why/Purpose. Work backward: If your paper provides answers, what questions would a scholarly reader assume you asked? 2. Research the Opposing View Temporarily adopt the opposition’s perspective. Assume they are good people who are reasonable and informed. Locate credible sources that support this view. Read with an open mind. Write 2–3 paragraphs capturing the opposition’s valid points. Freewriting style is fine. Briefly note any surprising insights or value the opposition contributes to the broader conversation. 3. Freewriting and Looping: Opposition Version Grab the four key ideas you developed in your One-Sided activity. For each idea, rewrite it from the opposing perspective. When finished, skim for emerging themes or areas of overlap. 4. Annotated Bibliography: Opposition Add at least two NEW sources that specifically support the opposing side. Do not reuse sources from Activity #1. Use proper APA citation. After each citation, include a Summary and Practical Application. 5. Outline Both Sides and Draft Early Middle Ground Ideas The more detailed your outline, the easier drafting becomes. Choose an organizing method: traditional outline, side-by-side list, idea bubbles, concept map, or another clear method. For each claim, list the source or sources that support it. Draft 3–4 specific middle-ground options that could initiate genuine compromise. 6. ONE Lit Review: Opposition Source Pick a new opposition source and write ONE Lit Review in four APA-formatted paragraphs: Summary Strengths of the argument Weaknesses of the argument Response: your connections, takeaways, and how you will use it Extra Credit Option: Add one additional fully developed Lit Review for up to 20 points. Want to do more? Each additional Lit Review after the one extra one can earn up to 5 more points. 7. Your Questions List any questions you still have about your topic, sources, organization, or middle-ground proposals. These questions will guide feedback and next steps.
