One of the most visible expressions of an organization’s strategy and values is its mission statement, which guides decision making, communicates purpose, and sets expectations for both internal and external stakeholders. Updating a mission statement, therefore, requires thoughtful collaboration, ethical awareness, and careful analysis.
In this assessment, you will build on your previous work by examining how effective teams contribute to strategic and ethical decision making. Using the same organization from Assessment 3, you will consider how team members from different functional areas can work together to address a strategic need—updating the organization’s mission statement. Rather than rewriting the mission statement itself, you will focus on how a team should be formed, what ethical principles must guide their work, and which critical thinking questions must be addressed before meaningful changes can be made.
By analyzing team composition, ethics, and decision-making processes, this activity will help you understand how collaboration supports clarity, integrity, and accountability in business. This assessment emphasizes the importance of selecting the right people, applying ethical principles, and using critical thinking to ensure that organizational goals are accurately and responsibly represented.
Preparation
Using the same organization as Assessment 3, complete the following:
Revisit the organization’s website and look for evidence of teamwork or the presence of teams, including in pictures and project descriptions.
Consider the following scenario:
Your chosen organization has determined that its mission statement needs to be updated accurately to reflect its strategy for the upcoming year, so you are forming a small team to work through this problem. Which functions do you want to select team members from? Why? What ethical principles does your team need to consider when making updates to a mission statement? Finally, what critical thinking questions does your team need to ask to update the mission statement? (Note: You will not be creating a new mission statement for this assessment.)
