The Professional Development Oral/Video w/PowerPoint Plan will serve as the capstone assignment for this class. In this project, you will present a plan for the role of either Athletic Director or Head Coach of your particular sport, or prepare for the role of Athletic Director or Head Coach. The five parts of this assignment are described below.
Part 1
In simple terms, prepare a Vision Statement for the program or department you lead. In simple terms, Vision is a picture of the future, focusing on what you want to create.
You will write your Vision Statement using information and insights from your readings, class assignments, and personal knowledge, experience, and observations. You can use the following questions below for guidance in developing your Vision:
- What does your ideal Program/Department/Staff/Team look like? What images come to mind?
- What is special about your hopes and dreams for the extraordinary program or department you will create?
- How is it distinctive compared to plans leaders at other schools or universities have?
- When you revisit this project 10-15 years from now into the future, what will it look like?
- Given the innovations and trends you forecast over the next decade, how does your plan anticipate change and success deep into the future?
Part 2
A three-year personal development plan for yourself designed to help you become the best possible head coach or athletic director. This should include a list of books and other materials you will read, places and people you will commit to visit to learn from, and anything else relevant to your improvement and development. Wise leaders understand that when opportunity comes, it is too late to wish that you were better prepared for it.
Part 3
A one-year staff development plan for either the role of a new athletic director or new head coach, having been hired just after the conclusion of the previous season. Among the various components of your plan, be sure to include: a) how you will share your mission and vision. Please include a brief Mission Statement. A Mission, in essence, succinctly describes an organization’s or program’s reason for existence. b) how you will create staff unity and foster good staff chemistry c) how you will improve the knowledge and teaching skill level of your coaches d) any other practical measures needed to ensure a top-quality athletic or team staff. d) A one-page Coaches’ Code of Conduct paper detailing standards, behaviors, and characteristics, both acceptable and unacceptable, which coaches will be required to sign. If you write from a head coach’s perspective, your Coaches’ Code of Conduct will be for yourself and all your assistants. If you write the Coaches’ Code of Conduct from an A.D.’s perspective, your staff is made up of the head coaches of the various sports at your university, high school, or middle school.
Part 4
A one-year Student/Athlete development plan. The plan should address:
- Identify three or four indispensable qualities of character and how you will instill those qualities. They should be prioritized and described. Please explain why each is indispensable for the welfare of the athletes and program/organization
- How you will develop leadership among your athletes
- How you will improve their academic performance and monitor their classroom behavior and performance
- Write a player code of conduct not to exceed one page in length which each athlete will be required to sign
Part 5
Your Professional Development Plan should conclude with your reflections on your authentic beliefs about what it means to be an effective, transformative leader. Please include your definition of transformative leadership.
Please write professionally with excellent grammar, spelling, punctuation, and sentence structure. Points will be deducted for errors in these areas, so please pay close attention to writing with precision, choosing vocabulary carefully, and avoiding grammatical errors. A leader must always strive to improve his or her written and oral communication skills. It is a developed skill that serves transformational leaders well for a lifetime!
